Views of best long-term investment by income?

There are some distinct differences in how people view the best long-term investment based on their household income. Although all groups view Real Estate as a better investment than Stocks, Mutual Funds, and Bonds, as household income increases, so do the number of people who feel Real Estate is a best long-term investment strategy.

According to the Gallup Poll below, you can see a distinct difference in how people view the best way to invest for the long-term based on household income. The question is which came first? Did those that think Real Estate is the best long-term investment acquire their wealth BECAUSE of that view? Or, do they believe Real Estate is the best long-term investment because they already have wealth, which could make investing Real Estate easier.

Do you think income creates wealth or that people’s beliefs create wealth? Do you see yourself in these numbers? Would you use Real Estate invesment strategy to create your long-term wealth or do you see yourself only investing in Real Estate when your household income increases?

What do you think is best for long-term investments?

Of four strategies for long-term investment, which do people believe are the best: Bonds, Stocks & Mutual Funds, Real Estate, or Savings Accounts?

According to a 2009 Gallup Poll, most people felt a Savings Account was best for long-term investments. Surprisingly, even in the height of the housing crisis, almost as many people believed investing in Real Estate was best for a long-term investment. And, twice as many people felt Real Estate was a better long-term investment than Bonds, Stocks, or Mutual Funds!

I wonder if people’s beliefs about long-term investment have shifted since 2009. What are your thoughts? Where would you put your money? What would prevent you from investing in Real Estate in today’s market?

From May 2010 to October 2011, of properties sold in the Hampton Roads, VA area, the percentage of distressed properties sold increased from 21% to 33% (REIN Statistics, 2011). When comparing the sales prices of distressed vs non-distressed properties during the same time frame and in the same area, the average difference between the increased from 30% to 40%. The number of active distressed residential resale properties have increased from 17% to 24%.

Is there a market for investors? The number of distressed properties have sold increased. The distressed property sales price has decreased. The number of active distressed properties have increased. And, the leading real estate indicators are telling us there will be more distressed properties hitting out market over the next year (at the very least).

Just from this short summary, I believe now is the time for smart investing. If you had the right real estate analyst who had the right tools and knowledge, would you research this investment opportunity further?
